Obituary - Martin Whitworth

Last Post: Tuesday 10th December 2024

We are sad to announce the passing of Martin Whitworth. Martin joined the Players around 2003, having previously been a member of Players Cheadle, where he started his time there by knocking in nails as part of the set building team. For his first stroll on the stage he was an extra in a crowd scene. Two plays later he took a lead role as Willie Mossop in Hobson’s Choice. This part had him nominated as best actor at GMDF which began his acting career. He retired to Stacksteads and was later diagnosed as having Alzheimer’s. Unfortunately he couldn’t act anymore but enjoyed the play reading group, despite his failing memory, and helping with the set building along with Richard, Joe and Stephen. He was still a great character full of life and really good fun to be with. He was larger than life, enjoyed meeting new people, and was involved with the bar, always with a pleasant smile and a friendly chat. He always felt well supported by members of the society. Martin continued to enjoy cruises with Hilary, who said that as long as they didn’t shout ‘man overboard!’ she could find him on the ship. Hilary and their family will miss him very much.
