84 Charing Cross Road
By Helene Hanff
In 1949 a struggling American writer, hoping to indulge her love of beautiful books, started a correspondence with a firm of British antiquarian booksellers that was to last for 20 years. The warm, compassionate and very human exchange of letters was published first as a book - 84 Charring Cross Road - and then adapted for the stage. The Play spans the years 1949-1971, and takes place in the New York apartment of Miss Hanff, and in Marks & Co., booksellers of 84 Charing Cross Road.
